In industrial production, compressed air, as an important power source, is widely used in various fields. However, unpurified compressed air often contains impurities such as moisture, oil droplets, and dust. These impurities can have adverse effects on pneumatic equipment and production processes, and may even damage the equipment and reduce product quality. Therefore, selecting a suitable compressed air filter and installing it correctly is crucial to ensuring the quality of compressed air.

I. Selection Chapter

(I) Clarify Usage Requirements

Before choosing a compressed air filter, it is first necessary to clarify its usage scenario and the requirements for compressed air quality. Different industries and processes have significantly different requirements for the purity of compressed air. For example, the food and pharmaceutical industries have extremely high requirements for air quality, and it is necessary to strictly remove microorganisms, dust, and oil from compressed air; while general manufacturing industries have relatively lower requirements for air quality. Therefore, determining the required air quality standards based on specific applications is the basis for selecting a filter.

(II) Consider Filtration Precision

Filtration precision is an important indicator to measure the performance of a filter, and it determines the size of impurities that the filter can remove. Common filtration precisions are divided into multiple levels from coarse to fine, such as 5μm, 1μm, 0.01μm, etc. The higher the precision, the stronger the filter's ability to remove tiny particles, but it also means higher costs and greater pressure loss. Therefore, it is necessary to reasonably select the filtration precision according to actual needs, and it is not that the higher the precision, the better. For example, for some equipment that is not very sensitive to impurities, choosing a filter with lower precision can meet the requirements, which can reduce costs and reduce pressure loss.

(III) Determine the Type of Filter

According to the filtration principle and function, compressed air filters are mainly divided into mechanical filters, activated carbon filters, oil-water separators, etc. Mechanical filters intercept impurities through a filter screen or filter element; activated carbon filters use the adsorption effect of activated carbon to remove odors and organic substances; oil-water separators are specially used to separate oil droplets and moisture in compressed air. In practical applications, it is often necessary to select the appropriate type of filter according to the composition and content of impurities in the compressed air, or combine multiple filters to achieve better filtration results.

(IV) Pay Attention to Processing Capacity

The processing capacity of the filter should match the flow rate of the compressed air. If the processing capacity of the filter is too small, it will restrict the flow rate of the compressed air and affect production efficiency; on the contrary, if the processing capacity is too large, it will not only increase the cost but also may affect the filtration effect. Therefore, when selecting a filter, it is necessary to choose a filter with a suitable rated flow rate according to the actual flow rate of the compressed air, and consider a certain margin to cope with possible flow fluctuations.

II. Installation Chapter

(I) Selection of Installation Location

The compressed air filter should be installed close to the point of use, which can reduce the transmission distance of the compressed air in the pipeline and reduce the risk of re-contamination of impurities. At the same time, avoid installing the filter in an environment with high temperature, humidity, or corrosive gas, so as not to affect the performance and service life of the filter. In addition, the installation location of the filter should be convenient for daily maintenance and filter element replacement.

(II) Key Points of Installation Sequence

When multiple filters need to be installed in the system, the principle of "coarse first, then fine" should be followed. That is, first install a coarse-efficiency filter to remove larger particles of impurities, then install medium-efficiency and high-efficiency filters in sequence to gradually improve the purity of the compressed air. Such an installation sequence can protect the filter element of the high-precision filter and extend its service life.

(III) Correctly Connect Pipes

When connecting the filter to the pipeline, ensure that the connection is tight and leak-free. Use appropriate sealing materials, such as gaskets and sealants, and tighten the connectors according to the specified torque. At the same time, pay attention to the inlet and outlet directions of the filter, and connect strictly in accordance with the equipment markings to avoid reverse connection, which may reduce the filtration effect or even make it ineffective.

(IV) Install Auxiliary Equipment

In order to better monitor the operation status of the filter, it is usually necessary to install pressure gauges and differential pressure gauges. The pressure gauge is used to monitor the pressure before and after the filter, and the differential pressure gauge is used to measure the pressure difference between the two ends of the filter. When the pressure difference exceeds a certain range, it indicates that the filter element may be blocked and needs to be replaced in time. In addition, a drain valve should be installed to regularly discharge the moisture and impurities separated from the filter.

Correct selection and installation of compressed air filters are of great significance for ensuring the quality of compressed air, extending the service life of equipment, and improving production efficiency. Enterprises should fully understand their own needs in actual operations, select and install filters in strict accordance with relevant specifications and requirements, and strengthen daily maintenance and management to ensure that the filters are always in good working condition.
